WHY RED LETTER LAW?
Wiki says: red letter law (plural red letter laws)
A law that is a large scale attempt by a government to regulate business in the interest of society at large.
My choice of the tag "Red Letter Law" is very tongue-in-cheek. Most are familiar with the letter of the law and, also, with Nathaniel Hawthorne's, "The Scarlet Letter" - where poor Hester Prynne was forever memorialized as a shameless hussy. Well, by who's standards?
Who gets to decide what's best for "society at large" when in our system of government big business is often driving the policy and law? I decided to re-claim the phrase. How about attributing its etymology to a red letter day or laws as interpreted by a red head (did I mention that I have red hair)? In our Wiki society - all that I have to do is amend the Wiki and get enough people to agree with my interpretation. Or, I can just carry on and challenge government, business or people who challenge my beliefs. I think that's what I'll keep doing!
As a side note, once in my life I was tagged with the metaphoric Scarlet Letter by unaccountable, unlawful, rogue, cop-wanna-be, government thugs. I will never stop fighting for what I believe to be right. That is who I am. If that is wrong then I'll proudly wear that letter.
As they say, if you don't stand for something - you stand for nothing. And, I've heard that which does not kill you makes you stronger - indeed it does! Who says that you can't fight City Hall? Government may have more money and resources but people have more tenacity, spirit and determination. The wrongful actions of government actors may cause adversity in people's lives - but, those actions can also fuel a passionate person's fire to keep fighting the good fight on behalf others.
